African Gap Year program PDF Print E-mail

The program runs from February to August each year, is based in the Limpopo province of South Africa, and consists of a seven months bridging year program where young adults have the opportunity to discover and develop themselves. This program is not for everyone. Not all candidates who apply will be accepted, and not all candidates who start the programme will finish it. This is not about money and prizes for everyone. It is truly challenging. The character of the candidates will be tested; they will develop physical and mental courage tempered by a sense of what is right and wrong. The one-on-one support is a fantastic addition to the team experience.

A group of approximately 40 young adults (ages 17-23) from various culture’s and language groups are thrown together in a base camp. Important life skills such as new values, visions, and emotional fitness are developed.
The base camp is in the majestic mountains of Mpumalanga, South Africa, where nature is still in charge. The purpose of the program is to create a safe environment where every individual is challenged to self–examine, self-discover, and finally self-create. The program is not always easy, as the first four weeks is an orienteering process with tough physical and mental challenges. Various exciting trips to places such as Mozambique, Graskop, Sabie, Durban, Naboomspruit, Game reserves, Orange river, Cape town, Drakensberg, Magoebaskloof hiking trails, Canopy tours in Hoedspruit, Gorge swing in Graskop, mountain bike events, swimming the Ebenezer Mile, Eiland, and various others are all on the schedule.
By the end of the seven months, the successful graduates will have developed real mental grit, exceptional physical stamina and will possess near unbreakable self esteem. Time and again they will have confronted and conquered their fears, either on their own, or as part of a team. They will have established exceptional bonds of friendship that will last a lifetime; most importantly they will have developed the real essence of leadership, which is carrying people with them by persuasion and example, and not merely learning how to grab the levers of power.
They will be able to identify bs and bullies for what they are; they will never again be intimidated as they confront the tyranny of fear; they will forever be their own person, they will of course be incredibly difficult to manage.
The program works brilliantly for both girls and boys.
In charge of all activities is Rudi, an entrepreneur with various skills and interests. As a father of two with a passion and vision to truly make a difference in the development of the youth, Rudi is an experienced coach and is well equipped for the task. He believes that each one of us holds all the wisdom and knowledge within to create and ultimately reach our highest goals.  Deliberate creation is an important technique, which, once learned, can produce powerful outcomes.

Participants are taught a variety of skills, such as packing your backpack, swimming with dolphins, knots, basic climbing techniques, horse riding, bush survival skills, organic vegetable gardening, running a business, changing a spare wheel, basic vehicle maintenance, food in the bush, fire-walking, dancing, sailing, sky-diving, scuba-diving, first aid, water-ski, self-defense, bird and tree identification, communication technique, and various others.

This is no holiday camp where privileged kids of the well-heeled go to play when they don’t know what else to do. This is a great place to learn something about how the other 99% live, the power of humility, and to be inspired by the understanding of the extraordinary difference individuals can make to those around them.
