Photographic Gap Year Adventure starting August 2011 through to May 2012

Visual Skills SchoolDo you want to become a photographer whilst having fun? Then this gap year is for you.

The amazing program focuses on photography and the visual arts, and includes many incredible travel opportunities throughout southern Africa during which you can practice your skills and prepare your portfolio.

 

Facilities

The school is located in the foot of the Magaliesberg mountains near Pretoria, and has been designed exclusively for students studying photography and visual arts.

There are many well-equipped rooms and studios, a library and study, and a pool of 600 cameras, lenses and accessories.

There is ample safe parking on the premises, and students have access to a swimming pool, bar, tv room and lounge, and pool table.

Overview of the program

The course leader for photography is Hein Waschefort, who is an internationally acclaimed photographer. All field trips are led and supervised by full time and part time lecturers of the school.

  • Field trip to Botshabelo - 2 days
  • Introduction to the wildlife of Africa
  • Field trip / safari to the Kruger National Park - 9 days
  • Workshops: Photo finishing; photojournalism
  • Field trip: Project: Week 1: 7 days in the life of South Africa
  • Compilation of your publication
  • Attend the annual Photographic Society of South Africa's national congress
  • One week break
  • Open water scuba diving course
  • Workshop: Underwater photography
  • Field trip to Inhaca Island, Mozambique - 10 days
  • Workshops: Photo finishing; Travel reporting
  • Prepare half year exhibition of your photos
  • Field trip / safari: Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe - 32 days
  • Workshop: Creative photography; Audio visual software; Fashion photography
  • Field trip: Botshabelo - 3 days
  • Workshops: Silkscreen; Portrait photography; Land art 1
  • Field trip: Golden Gate National Park - 4 days
  • Workshop: Land art 2
  • Field trip: West Coast; Cape Town and wine lands; Karoo desert; Kimberley - 1 monthAugrabies
  • Workshop: Photo finishing 1
  • Field trip: Punto do Ouro, Mozambique - 8 days
  • Workshops: Photo finishing 2; Advanced Photoshop; Advanced audio visual
  • Field trip: Sun City and Pilansberg National Park - 5 days
